Poker Hands - Bond Style

June 29th, 2010
Continuing with the theme of card games featured in movies, today it’s the turn of 007 - James Bond. The very first bond movie that introduced Sean Connery featured him at a card table in a casino. No surprise then that when the ‘new’ and latest 007 was introduced (Danield Craig), it was decided to re-introduce this theme. Why? Perhaps because gambling with cards is synonomus with gambling with life, often against the odds as in the life of a secret agent. So it was the ‘Casino Royale’ has a long sequence dedicated to an intense poker game in which the villain of the piece Le Chiffre is portrayed as a ‘percentage player’. To quote his line in the movie:

“I have two pair … and you have a 17.4 percent of making a straight.”

Bond, by total contrast, prefers not to concern himself too much with his poker hands, focusing on his ability to read people. His line follows:

“In poker, you never play the hand … you play the man across from you.”

Card Games In Movies

June 10th, 2010

The last post on this card trick blog was great fun to research and write - entitled Cards In Movies the post mentioned a Guy Ritchie movie and a Jackie Chan movie, both of which featured card games in some excellent scenes.

These movies are amongst quite a few that feature card games so I thought we’d take a look at some more in the next few blog posts.

Generally speaking, it’s the game of poker that movie directors prefer to feature in their scenes.  Sometimes, however, it is blackjack - as in the case of ‘One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.‘ The character played by Jack Nicholson (McMurphy) never has his deck of cards far away and is filmed playing with the deck in various scenes. This highlights the fact that he’s a real ‘card man’ and adds to the tension and atmosphere that the director gradually builds. The blackjack scene with Danny Devito is brilliantly scripted and acted and has been hailed by many critics as one of the best scenes in a ‘classic’ movie. Nicholson himself has publicly said that the movie is one of his 3 favourites that he’s ever made.
